The Wilson Central High School tennis team played their final game at home against Hendersonville. There was huge playoff implications for both teams, and the boys team (14-3 overall, 7-1 district) picked up a huge 6-1 win to clinch the #2 seed in the team district tournament. AJ Hughes won both his singles and doubles match in his last ever regular season match. Hughes won doubles 8-1 with Nick Mercante and singles 6-2, 6-1. Mercante had a crazy singles match as he trailed 1-5 in the first set, but forced a first set tiebreaker at 6-6. Mercante went on to win the tiebreaker, and then win the second set 6-0. Sean Brown, Charlie Ewing, and Bane Shafer also picked up wins in singles for the Wildcats to win 6-1. This season the Wildcats broke the record for most team wins in the season by a Wilson Central tennis team. In the team tournament, Wilson Central will play Green Hill in the first round on May 6th.
The girls team (8-8, 5-5) lost a close 4-3 match to Hendersonville. Unfortunately, this loss eliminated the girls team from the playoffs. They had three losses in the district that were decided by one match. They lost to Lebanon, Station Camp, and Hendersonville by one match. The Lady Wildcats were very close to making the playoffs this year, but the future is bright for them as they do not have any seniors, and can all get better for next season. In this match, Wilson Central´s wins came from Anindita Das at #1 singles, Kendra Clayton at #4 singles, and Carolyn Allison/ Clayton at #2 doubles. This will be their last team match, but they will still be playing in the district individual tournament. Make sure to follow our Twitter @WCSN16 for more updates.
Good luck Wildcats!
