Girls Varsity Basketball · Winter–Girls Basketball–Wilson Central Loses 6th Straight, drop to Portland 55-47

Article by Trevor McGee

While the regular season closes out, Wilson Central took the home court for their last regular season home game of the 2020-2021 season where it would be the Lady Panthers of Portland High School as the opposition. Portland would take control of the game late, and it would guide them to the 8 point district win. From the start, Wilson Central trailed 12-10 through the first quarter. This lead that the Lady Panthers accumulated continued to linger around. At halftime, the lead would be cut down with Wilson Central still trailing 17-16. The Wildcats would continue the trend of second half struggles and Portland would slowly extend the lead, leaving Wilson Central fighting for a comeback, down 34-31 through 24 minutes of play. With the last quarter of play still in the question, Wilson Central would be faced with having to only complete a three point comeback after trailing all of the first three quarters. Only having the 3 point lead, the Lady Panthers would not allow Wilson Central to close out the game with a comeback. The lead would extend and the game would end in favor of Portland with a final of 55-47. Sydney Dalton would be the Wildcats leading scorer with 18 points on the night. Campbell Strange would follow up the fellow Senior with 8 points of her own. Cloe Smith would follow her up with 6, then Breana Fayne came up with 5 points. These performances would be followed up by Kristen Smith scoring 4. The last scorers would be Chloe Daly, Fadeyemi Okewusi, and Lillian Crutchfield all with 2 points to their names. The Wildcats will next travel to Hendersonville High School to battle the Lady Commandos, on 2/12, for their last regular season game of the season before district tournament play begins.
