The Sanders Ferry Park course always proves to be a good race for the Wildcats, and did not fall short on September 12th 2020. On Saturday the girls varsity team had their top five all under 23:10. That’s an amazing improvement from last year, and both Coach Wild and Coach Morrison are excited to witness their athletes grow further. Senior Diana Denemark came 18th overall at 20:52, followed by Makenna Merkley only eight places behind in 26th at 21:36. The trio of Haven Thompson (59th, 23:08), Olivia Gessford (60th, 23:08), and Mia Jones (61st, 23:09) raced with one another the whole way, a key factor to the girls’ great improvements. These three girls stepped up to the challenge at hand, and the future of this season is looking good because of it.
Senior Elliott Hughes lead the boys in 24th at 17:21, breaking 18:00 minutes yet again. Atticus Simon followed suit in 40th place at 17:50, with Senior Jacob Harzbecker only two places behind at 17:51. Jude Wilt powered through this race, coming in 69th place with a time of 18:51. He has said before that track is more his style, but this season has so far proved his talents to be more diverse. Freshman Braden Huynh took 77th place overall at 19:14, and was the fifth runner for the varsity boys.
Both teams took 10th place out of 14 teams, but individually each runner is right where they need to be. Not peaking too early, the runners have built up a strong foundation for this season and are bursting at the seams to post their times. The Wildcats’ next chance for improvement will be Saturday September 19th at the most dreaded course, Steeplechase. Keep an eye out for the successes to come next week!
