This past Saturday the Wildcat Cross Country Team made an absolute breakthrough at the Coleman Midgett Invitational. The Hendersonville course was hot and fresh, but in no way prepared for the great improvements the Wildcats were about to demonstrate. Last meet the boys placed fifth and the girls seventh, but this meet each team moved up two places. With the varsity boys placing 3rd overall, great credit is due to phenomenal races from Alex Galligan who took fourth at 16:53, Andrew Farber who took 15th at 17:28, and Elliott Hughes who took 24th at 17:52. All three of the top boys ran well this weekend, and were within a minute of eachother. This was Elliott’s first time breaking the 18 minute barrier, and he has more potential still.
As for the girls, Diana Denemark took 8th with a time of 20:39, Makenna Merkley took 13th with a time of 20:57, and Elina Malancea took 33rd with a time of 22:35. The improvements made from both varsity teams have been immense in the short beginning of the season, and both Coach Wild and Coach Otten cannot wait to see more. Having both top runners come within the top 10 is a great achievement, and the Wildcats are looking at a great chance to be seen at regionals. One thing can be said for sure, the weather has been hot. These runners are capable of great things in the heat, and who knows what they could do on an optimal racing day. Wilson Central is getting ready to tear up Percy Warner State Park on Saturday September 21st for their next meet. Let’s get out there and give it everything Wildcats!
