Wilson Central was unable to hold the Lady Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the seventh, losing on a walk-off 3-2.
Coming into the game, Wilson Central was riding high on their huge upset win over Clarksville High School, the second ranked team in the state. Springfield defeated District 9AAA Champion Mount Juliet to claim their spot to host the Region 5AAA Championship. Both teams would go to sub-state, but a win for the Lady Cats would allow them to host their sub-state game.
The game looked bright early for Wilson Central, as the first run came in the first inning on a Shelby Moore fielder’s choice that scored Kaylee Richetto. Then, the Lady Wildcats scored again in the top of the third inning on a sac fly from Emily Rowe, knocking in Kaylee Richetto. The Lady Cats were silenced throughout the rest of the game, though. In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Yellow Jackets found the scoreboard with a home run to right field. However, the Lady Yellow Jackets were then shut out until the bottom of the seventh.
In the seventh inning, the Lady Cats were sat down in order, with Wilson Central on top 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. The first at bat resulted in the first base runner reaching on error. Then, the second batter was retired on a foul bunt. The third batter of the inning reached on another error, and a wild pitch advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd. All of this action was followed by a controversial bunt that may have hit the batter out of the box which would have been the 2nd out however, the umpire allowed the play to stand as the Lady Yellow Jackets completed a squeeze play to score the run and tie the game. Still another error scored the winning run for Springfield, sealing a walk-off, bunt-error win.
The Lady Cats only managed 3 hits on the day, 2 of these coming from Taelor Chang. Shelby Moore managed the other hit, with one of the 2 Wilson Central RBIs, with the other belonging to Emily Rowe. Kaylee Richetto pitched the entire game, giving up only 1 hit and walking 3. she recorded 3 strikeouts and 3 runs allowed, only 1 earned.
The Lady Cats now advance to the sub-state/sectional game and travel to Dickson County, a 6-5 upset winner over Summit High School. This game is scheduled for Friday, May 17. with the winner punching their ticket to the Spring Fling next week.
