Wilson Central reached the District 9AAA Championship for the third straight year, but they were unable to complete their comeback of the Bison, losing 3-2.
After Station Camp’s loss to Gallatin in the district semifinals, the Wildcats proved to be the undefeated team in the tournament. Their path to the championship included a shutout of Mount Juliet and a pair of defeats of 1-seed Hendersonville. The Bison captured their final victory before the championship with a 9-0 blowout of the Green Wave. The championship proved to be a tossup, as the two teams split during the regular season.
The game started with a Bison lead early, as Station Camp found 3 runs in the bottom of the first. This came from a pair of RBIs from Hunter Lautzenheiser. The Wildcats returned with a run in the top of the second, but that’s all they were able to muster up until the sixth inning. Matthew Jenkinson was pulled after 1.1 innings, and Nick Baker took the mound following. He shut out the Bison for the remainder of the game, and the Wildcats clawed back to a 1-run deficit in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats were down to 2 outs. Kameron Bond, with the Wildcats down to their final straw, blasted off a triple over the right fielder. The Wildcats were one swing of the bat away from a chance to go to the Region 5AAA Tournament. However, a fly out sealed the Wildcats’ fate.
Kameron Bond led the Wildcat offense with 2 hits, and Gabe Jennings is credited with the Wildcats’ sole RBI. He also drew one of the only 2 walks in the game, with Station Camp’s Zach Boze receiving the other. Jenkinson lasted 1.1 innings with a strikeout, giving up 3 runs. Baker tossed 4.2 with 5 K’s and no runs allowed.
Vanderbilt-commit Ryan Ginther tossed a complete game for the Bison, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. He struck out 8 Wildcats, and he also tied the Bison lead in hitting with 2 hits, and Lautzenheiser matched Ginther. Lautzenheiser tallied Station Camp’s 2 RBIs, and Ginther managed a 0.57 WHIP through the game, topping the Wildcats 3-2.
The Wildcats finish their season as District 9AAA runner-up at a 22-14 record, and they will lose seniors Gabe Jennings, Matthew Jenkinson, Jackson Odette, Blaine Mabry, Cole Fergusson, Kameron Bond, Hayden Baker, and Gary Denton.
Congratulations to the Wildcats on another successful year!
