The Wilson Central tennis team had an amazing run during the district semifinals and finals this week! Wilson Central dominated play in girls doubles to grab the top two spots! Top seeded seniors Sydney Miller and Savannah Westbrook defeated the number four seeds from Hendersonville in three sets to reach the finals! On the other side of the bracket, unseeded senior Abby Moser and junior Kiersten Moss upset the 2 seeds from Lebanon to set up an all Wilson Central battle in the finals! Miller and Westbrook defeated Moser and Moss 6-2, 6-3 to claim the district championship! Both teams advanced to the regional tournament which will be held in Hendersonville on May 13.
On the boys’ side in singles, sophomore AJ Hughes and senior Michael Mercante represented the Wildcats very well! Mercante, the two seed in the tournament, defeated the three seed from Station Camp 7-5, 6-1. Hughes, who was unseeded, lost to the top seed from Station Camp 6-0, 6-0. Mercante lost to Station Camp’s top player 6-0, 6-1 in the finals. Hughes lost to the third place match 8-2. Mercante qualified for his third-straight regional tournament!
In boys’ doubles, Sean Brown and Blaine Smith took on the top seed from Mt. Juliet. Brown and Smith had an early lead, but ended up falling 6-4, 6-2. Brown and Smith ended up in fourth with an 8-3 loss in the third place contest.
It was an awesome day for the team! Lots of hardware was won. I cannot be more proud of our team. We will be sending five players total to the regional tournament which is tops for our district.
