Wilson Central had both a champion and a pair of runner-ups crowned at the TSSAA State Individual Tournament in Franklin this past weekend Feb 15-16. Several Wildcat wrestlers went deep into the tournament, however.
In the 106 class, Michael Mercante was put out in a 6-3 decision by Bartlett’s Steven Dindl in the consolation quarterfinals.
Hunter Borders was runner up of the 113 class after losing a close, 7-5 match with Cleveland’s Jackson Bradford in the finals.
Steven Fisak finished fourth in the 126 class after losing to Luke Dezember of Lawrence County and battling back into the consolation final with a 4-2 decision over Rossview’s Ethan Moore.
Finishing fifth in the 138 class was Cole Fort, defeating Houston’s Jake Manuel after losing 10-4 to Franklin’s Job Dooley in the consolation semifinals.
Alex Pergande took runner-up in the 145 class after losing to Cleveland’s Grant Lundy 5-1 in the championship round.
The third place spot in the 160 class was an all-Wilson County affair, as Ryan Brown of Lebanon pinned Levi Stone in the third period. Stone then won over Arlington’s Dalton Cockman by forfeit.
Michael Kramer returned to the 285 final for the third year in a row, this time winning his second straight championship. He defeated Walker Valley’s Jackson Langfield in just 43 seconds to cap off an undefeated season.
Out of the 10 wrestlers that the Wildcats took to state, 8 finished in the top 8 in their weight class, a solid weekend for the Wildcats.
