This past weekend the Wilson Central Wildcat Winter Guard accepted first place at the Wilson Central Winter Classic. The winter guard program is still new and this is their first time accepting such an outstanding award. Along with this, the band and winter guard hosted their first Southern Color Guard Circuit competition. They named the competition the Wilson Central Winter Classic. Fifty-six groups were projected to arrive, including winter percussion groups, winds, and winter guard teams. The competition was a success and is hoped to happen again next year.
The Wildcat’s winter guard still has three competitions remaining. This includes Spring Hill High School’s competition, Columbia Central High School’s competition, and Championships which will be held at Western Kentucky University.
Winter Guard is an indoor sport that includes a theme that is tied to a song. The members of the team spin a variety of things including flags, rifles, sabres, and much more.
The Wildcat’s winter guard theme this year is named “You Are Home”. The show is about losing a loved one and the song used is ‘Supermarket Flowers’ by Ed Sheeran. The team uses two different flag silks, the first has a rim of roses and the second is a picture of a sky. They have three soloists including Chapel Reese, Liv Rawlings, Mady Jones, Madisen Siddell and Tristin Williams The team practices three times a week and is taught by Scottie Simpkins and Kris Harris, both former and current winter guard entrepreneurs. The Wildcat’s have 19 members including captains Jamese Clay and Caroline Carter.
