Girls Varsity Basketball · Winter–Girls Basketball–Lady Cats Fall to Lady Bucs in Final Minute 48-45

By: Jake Hood

Wilson Central traveled to Beech High School this past Tuesday night and gave the Lady Bucs all they could handle in a “rockem sockem” basketball game. District leading Beech finally took victory number 18 against only 5 losses in the final 9 seconds of the game.  Wilson Central had chances to close out the game in the final minute for what could have been a big victory.  However, playing with 2 key players on the bench due to fouling out, Central maintain their lead only to see Beech play Beech Ball  in their house as they continued to chip away  little by little at the lead.  The Lady Wildcats held a 7 point lead in the final minutes of play only to see Beech toss in a long range three and hit free throws down the stretch to finally take the lead with 9.6 seconds left on the clock hitting 2 charity stripe shots to lead by three.   Out of timeouts, the Lady Wildcats had to go the length of floor in 2.5 seconds, which on this night, was just not enough time to get a game knotting three point shot attempt.  The game was over and the  final score was  48-45.

Lady Wildcat Sophomore Sydnee Richetto, one of the up and coming stars in District 9AAA  had another Sydnee Richetto night scoring 24 points while shooting 50% from the field and hitting all six of her free throws. She added 5 rebounds, an assist, and a block. Following Richetto was Miyaunna Cason, putting up 7 points along with 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Other scorers for the Lady Cats were Aubree Starnes, Nicole Brill, Jasmine Angel, and Sydney Dalton. This effort gave Wilson Central the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bucs were able to battle back for the victory.

Mia Dean led scoring for Beech with 12 points, hitting a three and nine free throws. Deshiya Hoosier was a layup shy of Dean, finishing the night with 10 points. Hoosier also led Lady Bucs rebounding with 6, 4 offensive and 2 defensive. Jana Claire Swafford hit two threes, a layup, and a free throw, giving her 9 points total. Beech was able to hang with the Lady Cats for the entire game, finally pulling away in the final 30 seconds of play.

The Lady Wildcats drop to 14-7, and will take on the Lady Blue Devils of Lebanon at home on January 25.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on the NFHS Network.
