Wilson Central entered the semi-final match with Beech on Saturday Feb 17 with one thing on their mind—TO WIN. It may not have been as pretty as year’s past but the Lady Wildcats put forth a defensive effort that any coach or spectator would be proud to witness. The final score of 29-25 was a low scoring affair as both teams battled up and down the floor all night. With the 1st quarter score of 2-2 and the halftime score 12-7, both teams went to the locker room wanting to make things right on the offensive end of the floor. The Lady Wildcats had the upper hand in the third quarter doubling up and outscoring Beech 12-6 to make the 3rd quarter 18-17 Beech. Going into the 4th quarter more of the same came from Wilson Central as they continued to hold the Lady Bucs to only 7 points while hitting a total of 11 of 19 free throws that proved to be the ingredient needed to win the game. Rebounding was another strong element as Wilson Central grabbed 20 defensive rebounds for the win. Beech held Lady Wildcat Freshmen Sydnee Richetto to only 3 points, well below her game average, but Sophomores Nicole Brill who picked up the slack with 14 and Jasmine Angel with 6 propelled the Lady Wildcats to the win. Foul shots late by Julia Maki scored 4 foul shots and Taylor Tucker’s 2 were all Wilson Central needed to keep Beech at bay and to grab the upset victory.
Now onto the championship game. Unofficially, since 2001, either Mt. Juliet or Wilson Central have participated in the championship game. With that said, still another show down between the two District 9AAA rivals. Mt. Juliet earned their way into the game with a 57-51 victory over Lebanon to guarantee a home game in the first round of the Regional next Friday night as does Wilson Central. Opponents in the regional will either be Kenwood High School or Clarksville High School. Again, first things first, the District 9AAA crown. WC or MJ? Gametime will be tonight Feb 19 at 8:00. That game is preceded by the consolation game between Lebanon and Beech 6:30.
Again, you can watch the championship live over the NFHSnetwork produced by the Wilson Central Sports Network. Broadcast slated to begin about 7:45 with tip-off at 8:00.
