Wilson Central faculty, athletic department coaches, softball players and parents held a reception on Tuesday May 23rd as Mr. Travis Mayfield, Principal of WCHS announced the hiring of former Independence Softball Coach Melissa Weiland to become the next Head Coach of the Lady Wildcats. Weiland, who will be teaching in the Language Arts Department, had been the head coach at the Williamson County school for 3 years. She takes over for interim Coach Shawn Smith who led the Lady Wildcats to a 25-17-1 record this past season.
Weiland was a softball and basketball standout from Riverdale playing for Micheal Burt’s state champion teams in the early 2000’s. She then starred for the Lady Blue Raiders Softball Team at MTSU where she was voted All-Conference. Her earlier coaching positions were at Riverdale and Tullahoma serving as an assistant coach prior to being named Head Coach at Independence.
Joining Coach Weiland as an assistant pitching and hitting coach will be Leigh McCutchen who comes from Seigel High School in Murfreesboro.
