The Lady Wildcats are having to make available some oxygen tanks at their games for their fans as the Girls who swing the bats are making it quite interesting in the District 9AAA Tournament. Having lost to Hendersonville Monday night the Lady Wildcats were forced to climb through the losers brackets to try and advance to the regionals. With an uphill climb, Wilson Central defeated Beech 7-3 after trailing early and surviving bases loaded situations to win Tuesday night. Wednesday vs. Lebanon was just a little more action in key innings. This game was strictly a back and forth will to win on both teams as the game had 4 lead changes. Lebanon struck first with one run in the first inning. Wilson Central countered with 5 in the second to take the lead back only to see Lebanon score 3 in their half of the inning. With the score 5-4 each team scored 2 runs in the third while Wilson Central added a run in their 4th inning to make the score 8-6 good guys (gals). But the bottom of the 5th was the undoing of the Lady Wildcats, or so it seemed, as the Lady Blue Devils scored 4 runs, 3 coming on a bases loaded triple with 2 outs by M.Jalselskis making the score 10-8 Lebanon. With no runs scored in the 6th inning, the game came down to the top of the 7th. Lebanon knew they were only 3 outs away from winning and advancing, and Wilson Central knew they were 3 outs away from hanging up the cleats.
With one out, and the Lady Blue Devils facing the bottom of the batting order, Kenzie Meador reached on a bunt single followed by a line drive by Paige Robinson to the pitcher who mis-handled the hit allowing Robinson to take first base. Still with one out and runners on 1st and 2nd lead off hitter Claire Smith hits a rocket to the second baseman who misplayed the hit allowing the “Cardiac Cats” to load the bases. That brought up Sophomore Alaina Morris who rips the first pitch to left field scoring Meador from third. On this same play, throwing errors were committed by Lebanon allowing Robinson to score from second tying the game at 10-10 and Claire Smith to score from first clearing the bases, making the score 12-10. Alaina Morris reached third once all the dust cleared. The Lady Wildcats still had 2 outs to advance Morris from thrid. Enter Sophomore Kaylee Richetto, the next batter, who took a 1-2 pitch to deep center field allowing Morris to tag and score making the score 13-10. Can you say biggest inning of the season?
Lebanon still had the bottom of the 7th to take the game from the Lady Wildcats as this game was a back and forth affair all night. The defense rose to the occasion once again as Senior Eboni Jordan gunned down the first batter to first baseman Morgan Stokes followed by the same from Short Stop Brooke Pfefferle. With 2 outs and the Wilson Central crowd roaring with every pitch, Richetto walked the third batter of the inning. Lebanon still had a glimmer of hope but when M Jalselskis popped up to Claire Smith who, with both hands secured the third out of the game, started the “solid celebration of joy” for the Lady Wildcats.
So the Lady Wildcats will now advance to play their 4th game in 4 days against Mt. Juliet who beat Gallatin in the opposite loser’s bracket. This game will be played at Vol State Community College with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00pm.
GO LADY WILDCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
