Having to play a team 3 times in one season can be a challenge. But 4? well that’s what Wilson Central was facing in the Finals of District 9AAA. The Lady Bears of Mt. Juliet a cross county rival (12 miles) had played the Lady Wildcats 3 times. Once at the Overton Christmas Tournament and twice in the regular season. All three times the Lady Wildcats won with the game at Mt. Juliet being the closest 48-47. The previous meeting saw Wilson Central firing on all cylinders scoring a 53-26 victory in the last regular season game at Wilson Central. On Monday Feb 20 the championship was played and match number 4 was started. Mt. Juliet jumped up quickly to a small lead only to see the Lady Wildcats do what they do best….shoot. Lady Bear Head Coach Chris Fryer defended the girls from the Glade with a triangle and two, guarding The District Most Valuable Player Addison Byrd and Piper Elrod. However, Lindsey Freeman, Nathalie Ventura, and Taylor Tucker knew they had to pick up the slack and that is exactly what they did. Freeman, selected as MVP of the tournament led scoring for the team with 14 points Once Wilson Central showed they had more then Byrd and Elrod forced Mt. Juliet to play a more conventional defense. Byrd finished with 10 while Elrod scored 6. What some basketball lovers may not have realized yet is the Lady Wildcats can play some defense to. While scoring 14 points in the 1st and 2nd quarters, Wilson Central held Mt.. Juliet to 6 points in the 1st and 8 in the second. More of the same continued in the 3rd and 4th quarter holding the Black and Gold to 7 in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th. The highlight of the game came at the end of the 1st quarter. With approximately 10 seconds left Piper Elrod was dribbling through the Lady Bear Defense and finally found Taylor Tucker with 2 seconds left. Tucker turned to shoot from 40 feet away and all you can say is “nothing but net” as Wilson Central took a 14-6 lead into the 2nd quarter. You can see this shot on twitter @wcsn16 or NFHSnetwork.com. Making all district for the regular season was Piper Elrod, Addison Byrd and Lindsey Freeman while the same trio made all tournament with Freeman being selected as Tournament MVP.
